Athens, the homeland of cheerful hellenes. A big city where about 4 million people live and an equal amount of tourists visit there every year to see ancient Agora and Acropolis. Near Acropolis you can find a shopping street, Efaistos, which is real paradise if you think about their prices. For example full length, good quality leather jacket will costs only 170 Euros.
Back to the point. Everything started when a little bit after new year I noticed that Virgin Steele will play two gigs in Greece. Two weeks before Athens gig I decided to pack my suitcases and direct my mind, body and spirit to Greece. 12th of February I left to city of the ancient Gods to see the Gods of today. When I left, the temperature in Finland was minus 22 degrees Celsius, ha HA to that! Well, I wasn't laughing in Athens anymore because on the same evening it started to snow and the snowing continued to the next day also. Rock On Magazine editor in chief, Sakis Fragos, said that I was traveling away from the snow just to find more snow. And Agathi Club's (Agathi means Thor) door man was jokingly saying that I brought Finland's bad weather with me.
Agathi is a heavy metal music club near Omonia square. The reason I was there was of course Virgin Steele, who had a signature session in Agathi Club. Sakis figured that it would start about 10 p.m., so of course I was there in time. I was very surprised because Virgin Steele started to give signatures at midnight and Club didn’t open until eleven o’clock. What the fuck?! It was still snowing, it was cold outside, there was no cafeteria near Agathi and returning to my hotel wasn't definitely an option. Then came along the Greek kindness which surprised me many more times during the evening. The door man said that I could wait inside of the club until it would open. In Finland that kind of thing would be never possible.
When the club opened doors I was amazed! The decor was elegant but sort of barren. The floor and ceiling were black, walls were dark blue and a lot of weapons were hanging on the walls. I counted about 20 swords, few battleaxes and at least one cross-bow with bolts. Price level was quite the same as in Finland, but I actually bought only two beers within the whole night. Rest of them were offered by the club or Rock On Magazine.
Shortly before the midnight I almost dropped my Heineken to the floor; Virgin Steele arrived. I noticed how small David was and then introduced myself to him, which was a great idea. David said that he couldn't recognize me first because of my different hair style.
When VS started to give signatures I reached Greek fans first. I had to lean against the wall for a while before a road to David was clear. To get a signature from all members took almost half an hour because David was the only one who was standing behind a table longer than 5 minutes straight. It didn't matter because I had a great opportunity to talk with David. And because we had time I showed David my Age Of Consent-tattoo which (about a year ago) I promised to show him when we would meet some day. Edward arrived to the table and David said to him that he should look my tattoo, too. Gradually Greek fans left Virgin Steele members alone so they could also to go and buy something to drink. I was wondering how David could climb to the bar chair which was way too high to me (and that's why I had to stand the whole night..).
Greek kindness came out next time when one unknown guy went to my table and offered me a drink. He was, Mikes, Agathi Club owner. Mikes wondered that how crazy Finnish person could be; traveled to Greece only because of Virgin Steele. Well, I have never said that I am totally sane person.
During the evening and night David visited my table many times. He was smiling a lot and he was so good looking... When VS was inside the club every second song was something from Virgin Steele, which didn't seem to disturb David at all. Edward also decided to honor my company. I noticed his VS-locket which was looking great. Edward promised to me his locket after Sunday's gig and I thought he was kidding me. Edward swore to me that he's telling me the truth... and he was. That night I also saw David as a DJ. He was playing quite good music indeed.
At some point of the night I was telling to David that I still didn't have a ticket to their Sunday gig. David said that he will find a promoter and put my name on Virgin Steele's guest list. And so let it be done.
When you have a great time, time goes too fast. Too soon we have to leave the club because they were closing it. I said goodnight to Virgin Steele's members and ran into the kindness of Greeks. First the door man tried to call a cab for me which was impossible because of the snow. The matter was cleared when one of Agathi Club worker drove me to my hotel and also gave me a whole pack of cigarettes because I was totally out of them. And still he didn't want any money.
At the hotel I couldn't get to sleep that well. The only thing in my mind was David, David and David again. I saw a dream where were he, I and Lauri from The Rasmus. I have no idea why and where did Lauri come into my dreams.
